Looks like you will now have to shell out more money for carrying excess baggage on airlines.
Low-cost carriers IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir have now revised their excess baggage fares, which include both pre-booking charges for baggage as well as fees that needs to be paid at airports if not pre-booked. The baggage allowance limit for each of these airlines, however, is still 15kg.
IndiGo has hiked its pre-booking excess baggage charges on domestic flights by 33 per cent. The airline's charges for pre-booking an extra 5kg, 10kg, 15kg and 30kg will now be Rs 1,900, Rs 3,800, Rs 5,700 and Rs 11,400 respectively. Before the revision, passengers had to pay Rs 1,425 for every extra 5kg, Rs 2,850 for 10kg, Rs 4,275 for 15kg and Rs 8,550 for 30kg.
If booked at the time of check-in, IndiGo will charge Rs 400 per kg (inclusive of GST) as compared to an earlier Rs 300 per kg.
GoAir's pre-booking charges for excess baggage are the same as that of IndiGo - Rs 1,900 for 5kg, Rs 3,800 for 10kg, Rs 5,700 for 15kg and Rs 11,400 for 30kg. Earlier, pre-booking baggage rates on GoAir were 1,450 for 5kg, Rs 2,800 for 10kg, Rs 4,100 for 15kg and Rs 8,000 for Rs 30kg.
"Excess baggage from 16 kgs onwards would be charged at Rs 400 per kg effective June 23, 2018," read the airline's official website. The airline was earlier charging Rs 350 per kg at the time of check-in.
Pre-booking baggage charges for SpiceJet are now Rs 1600; Rs 3,200; Rs 4,800; Rs 6,400 and Rs 9,600 for 5kg, 10kg, 15kg and 30kg respectively. Earlier, pre-booking charges for SpiceJet were the same as IndiGo's previous baggage rates - Rs 1,425 for every extra 5kg, Rs 2,850 for extra 10kg, Rs 4,275 for 15kg and Rs 8,550 for 30kg.
Excess baggage fee for SpiceJet has also been revised to Rs 400 per kg as compared to an earlier Rs 300 per kg, for transaction taking place at the time of check-in.
IndiGo and SpiceJet's new fares came into effect from June 22.
A while ago, Air India also revised its excess baggage fees. The airline revised its EBR (Excess Baggage Rate) to Rs 500 plus applicable GST per kg on all travel commencing on or after June 11, as compared to an earlier Rs 400 per kg.
